The faculty are involved in teaching and training the undergraduates (MBBS, BPT, BSc Nursing, BSc AHS) and postgraduates (MD/MS, MDS, MSc) of this institution. In service training is provided to MD Pathology postgraduates (intake of 3 ostgraduates per year).
Traditional lecture classes for the third and fourth semester MBBS students have been replaced by MILA (Multiple Interactive Learning Algorithm) in the form of small group discussions, wherein the 150 students are divided into 3 batches of 50 students each and in each batch, the students are again subdivided into 7 to 8 groups of 6 to 7 students each. The sessions are taken in classrooms equipped with interactive smartboards. A topic will be discussed by the faculty for the first 20 minutes followed by student-centred interactive learning by using the following methods:
a. Peer-led team based learning
b. POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning)
c. Case based discussion
e. Concept mapping
f. Group discussion
g. Clay modelling
The practical sessions are also conducted in the same topics. Unique ipad based teaching is followed in our department. The course content and presentations of the faculty are uploaded into the ipad. The faculty and the students have unique ids to access the lectures in their individual ipads.
Postgraduate training is done by slide and group discussions, seminars, journal clubs, Structured autopsy and gross discussions and Pedagogy sessions. The students maintain a unique portfolio of all their work. Assessments are done using conventional written tests as well as DOPS (Directly observed practical skills). Regular monthly clinicopathologic conferences are held with all the clinical departments including superspeciality departments. Monthly nephropathology meets are also held in our department.
